woodend mining museum > home home facilities gallery how to find us -- the only mining museum in the burnley coalfield woodend colliery was one of the smaller pits in the burnley coalfield, it opened in 1912 and closed completely in 1959 and it was in fact the last vertical pit shaft to be sunk in the area. although there were a lot of pits in this area there is unfortunately very little left on the surface for us to see and so when harry and carole johnson bought the old colliery site in september 2009 little did they know of the history it held. as the site was cleared small artefacts were discovered and as the saying goes “from little acorns do mighty oak trees grow” in this case from a few rusty tools has a small but superb museum grown. the site is now home once again to all manner of mining equipment dating from victorian britain to the recent past. also in the collection are social history items which serve to remind us all of the hardships endured by families not that long ago, in fact well within living memory for a lot of people. although most of the museum is dedicated to the burnley mines there are also artefacts from other mining areas and any donations of information or memorabilia will always be gratefully received. closed mondays tues – saturday the museum is open 11am until 4pm group visits by arrangement educational visits by arrangement facilities we have full toilet facilities including an accessible toilet. this is a level and accessible site but also farmland so we advise sensible shoes. as the museum adjoins our caravan and camping site why not come and stay awhile. check out www.smithsonfarm.co.uk group visits and talks if you are looking for a different experience for your group then why not come along and see us and enjoy and informative tour of the museum. your guide will often be an ex miner who will have a wealth of knowledge and be able to recount what life was really like underground. then follow the tour with a visit to our brand new traditional tea room (photo to follow when it is finished) and enjoy a delicious light lunch or afternoon tea with bottomless tea or coffee. whilst you're here you will be able to see what we believe is the biggest miner’s lamp in the world, standing at 10ft 6” high, ideal for a memorable photograph. gift shop we have a range of high quality handmade gifts for sale including greetings cards, hand painted glass and china and coal figures. we also sell jams, marmalades and chutneys which are made on the farm together with honey from our own bees and eggs from our free range hens. tea shop our tea shop sells light refreshments including speciality teas, homemade cakes and cream teas. groups can pre- order. the museum adjoins our caravan and camping site so why not come and stay awhile! check out www.smithsonfarm.co.uk . this is a level and accessible site but we recommend strong footwear woodend mining museum smithson farm woodend reedley hallows burnley lancashire bb12 9dr tel: 01282 420701 e: info @woodendminingmuseum.org.uk login website design , cms and search engine optimisation by whalley websites
